The Mother’s Load
“The Mother’s Load” is a collection of playful and expressive abstract paintings that reflect the complexity of the emotional load a mother carries as she balances celebrating the growth of her children and grieving the loss of her babies (and all the feelings in between).
This work celebrates the wholeness of being human and the capacity of the heart, especially a mother’s, to hold so much at one time.
The Mother’s Load
This work is raw, energetic, and a little wild, but it is also sweet, joyful, and free. It was made in between nap times and long walks and breaking news and silly stories.
It was made while dancing and singing and crying and breastfeeding.
It was made through presence and connection.
It was made with so much love.

Every day I hold within me grief and joy, rage and elation, fear, contentment, awe, heartbreak, gratitude, despair, sadness, and a deeply profound sense of love that feels like it could break me at any moment - all of these feelings inside me stewing together like a pot of soup that has been simmering on the stove for hours and tended to throughout the day. The recipe is always improvised, making adjustments to the flavor as I go (a little bit of love and grace and patience and empathy goes such a long way) and by dinner time it’s served to sweet little mouths in between mouthfuls of questions about “why?” and “how long?” until bedtime when I hold them, listening to them pant in their sleep, promising “always always always always”.

I had a baby and then my art changed.
Ever since coming back to my creative practice after Gwen was born, my art has been different. I tried, at first, to paint in the familiar way, like I had before, but everything I tried was a fight and I ended up trashing several paintings. Eventually, I relented to the process and allowed myself to explore more, committed to the mission of expression over production, and, eventually, this new form of expression emerged.
The Mother’s Load Collection reflects the transformation that occurs when one assumes the role of mother - the fracturing and scattering of the pieces of self, like when the elastic string of a beaded bracelet snaps and pops of beads rain on the floor. There is an instinct to find all of the pieces, to reassemble the bracelet, to tie the string back together, but it just doesn’t fit right anymore, not like before, so something new has to be created.

The Wolf Series
Searsha has collaborated with me on paintings since she was old enough to hold a paint brush. For my 2020 collection, “There are No Bad Emotions”, she contributed to the bottom left corners of all the paintings (because that is the only part she could reach once upon a time). As she has grown, her contributions have matured to mixing colors, painting base layers, and adding finishing marks.
But I've been dreaming of a way to incorporate her own art into my work.
When she was 4, maybe 5, I taught her how to draw a lion using the number 5, and she started drawing little number 5 lions all the time, eventually turning them into wolves (her favorite animal).
Her little wolf drawings are my absolute favorite and hold such a special place in my heart and memory of her childhood that I had to incorporate them and her other drawings into the works on paper for this collection.
