Original Mixed Media Painting on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
20 x 20 x 0.25

As an intuitive and expressive abstract painter, painting is oftentimes my source of therapy, a way of expressing that for which there are no words and a compass for navigating the unfamiliar path. My paintings often begin from an impulse, this subconscious pressure driving me to make the unseen, seen. I never know where the path will lead me, or what the finished product will look like, I only know the need to begin.

With my “Land and Sky” collection, I felt a strong need to be bolder with my marks and to not only take up more space, but to take up all of the space. Prior to this collection, I had not painted on a canvas much larger that 10x8. In this series, the smallest I painted was a 10x8 and the largest was 40x30.

Color is where I begin with most of my paintings and with this series there was a need for more earth, specifically in the form of salted caramel and red clay which serves as the vein running through the entirety of the series. Red clay and salted caramel were my colors of comfort, helping me to feel warm, connected, and held by the earth, as I navigated one of the most challenging periods of my life. The deep, oceanic blues and thick, forest greens felt like a blanket, like the feeling of safety, the feeling of welcomed silence; they were the force of each painting pushing me to pause. The dreamy blues and Fir greens paired with the warmth of Burnt Sienna felt both like floating in the middle of the ocean and laying on your back in the middle of the woods looking up at the night sky at the same time. Each painting brings with it a depth, a feeling of warm darkness, like that which is felt in deep sleep, and is balanced with promise and sweetness of the most tender pinks and blushes.
